I believe no matter how hard you plan a production there will always be an element of chance. If the idea of luck is not a crank-turner for you, you might at least extend the offer of friendship to some small token amount of mysticism. It will be with you even without the invitation.
I like to randomly open the book The Way of Chuang Tzu, by Thomas Merton. This time it opens to the poem, The Lost Pearl. Perfect. It is telling me that as we set out into the unknown territory of a new production, there is no science or logic to guide us. The “night pearl” will be found in a state of nothingness.
Ok. Armed with that thought, I will need to deal with elements of a team that stretches from Yellowknife to Toronto to Chester, Nova Scotia. I will need to dot the “I’s” and cross the “t’s” in our broadcaster agreements and our CMF applications. I will need to make sure the bank stays happy, equipment works, lawyers and insurance underwriters are sweat-free. And finally, “beginning with the end in mind”, I will need to see a road forward that summons all the creative and technical abilities we can bring to the project. I will need to keep the end of that road in sight.
