In 2009, Nexus entered its tenth year. It has been a decade of international documentaries, development of children’s television, a decade of branching into new media and “serious” games, and generally trying to make productions that we hoped would make a difference to Canadians. Along the way, we were fortunate to work with young people in the First Nations community of Eskasoni, helping them develop their own production capacity. An interesting ten years. We are a small, family company, basically two people, at this point; myself, Don Duchene, and my wife Connie Duchene. I think of us as a left brain and a right brain but I don’t like to let on who has which. The job gets done. Natasha has written the music scores for all of our work for the last five years or so and she will be directing, North Paws, a doc about saving dogs in Yellowknife.
We are located in Chester, Nova Scotia. The lion’s share of the company’s time seems to be spent developing and financing projects. When we go into production it is usually in association with another company or with a team that we put together for that purpose. That is our preference; it keeps us small, which is the way we want to keep things, for the time being at least. Small is beautiful, as they say.
